"To create moments of insight, we need to break the script. Predictability is the enemy of memorable."
-The Power of Moments
Book Recommendation: The Power of Moments written by Chip and Dan Heath
The Power of Moments by Chip Heath and Dan Heath explores why certain brief experiences can jolt us, elevate us, and change us; and how such moments can be created in our lives and work. The book argues that our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: Elevation, Insight, Pride, and Connection. Elevation lifts us above the everyday with feelings of joy, awe, or deep engagement. Insight rewires our understanding of ourselves or the world. Pride captures moments of achievement or courage. And Connection deepens our relationships with others through shared experiences. The Heath brothers use a mix of research and real-world examples to show how we can create more such impactful moments. By understanding and leveraging these elements, individuals and organizations can craft memorable experiences with lasting impact.
Personal Takeaways
This is an incredible read because this knowledge can be applied to your business and implemented in all your relationships. Here's an insight to ponder: “What are some small efforts I could take to make a moment more special, memorable, or sentimental?” This could be taking the time to fill water balloons to playfully attack your kids when they get off the bus on a sunny afternoon. Or writing a personal thank you to your General Contractor for making your projects run smoothly. Or expressing gratitude for their patience on your first flip or investment property. You can’t tell me that GC won’t have more of a vested interest after you take time to make them feel seen. It's nice to do nice things for people. It makes you feel great, makes them walk around lighter and able to interact with the people around them at a higher level. We can make waves. Check out the book, it’s a quick read or listen on Audible!
