"I have always believed that music should make you feel something and take you somewhere."

Life is a Single Player Game by Rob Bergeron
I love challenging myself creatively, and my latest project is no exception. After successfully writing a Christmas album in just one month of November a couple of years ago, I’ve decided to take on something even more ambitious: a concept album based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
Recently, I watched a documentary series on Paul Simon, considered one of the best songwriters of our time. I was deeply inspired by how nuanced and intricate his approach to songwriting is. Simon always searches for unique variations and new ways to approach sounds, and this mindset has greatly influenced my own project.
For those unfamiliar, Maslow’s hierarchy is a psychological theory that categorizes human needs into a five-tier model, ranging from basic physiological needs to self-actualization. My goal with this album is to musically interpret each level of the hierarchy, starting with minimalist, rudimentary songs for the most basic needs and culminating in a dynamic, profound piece for self-actualization.
The journey begins at the foundation with songs reflecting the essentials of life—food, shelter, air. These tracks are intentionally simpler and quieter, mirroring the fundamental nature of these needs. As we move up the pyramid, the music evolves, gaining complexity and richness, much like the human experience as we seek safety, love, esteem, and ultimately, self-actualization.
To bring this vision to life, I’ve been leveraging conversational ChatGPT to deepen my understanding of Maslow’s hierarchy. By asking specific questions and gathering insights, I’m able to incorporate insightful nuggets into my lyrics and compositions. This collaboration with AI not only enriches my creative process but also helps me articulate the intricate layers of human needs in a unique way.
Interestingly, my buddy Matt Barbiea and I recently finished the sixth book in the Red Rising series. We had some deep discussions about Darrow’s character arc towards self-actualization. It's fascinating how Darrow evolves from being merely a tool of war to someone who seeks higher purpose and fulfillment, mirroring the journey I aim to depict in my album.
Currently, I have two or three songs in the works, and I’m excited about how this project is shaping up. I believe this album will potentially resonate with many, offering a musical journey through the stages of human fulfillment.
Given my limited skill set, if you happen to have skills in music production or an interest in collaborating, please reach out. I’d love to hear from you!
Stay tuned as I continue to develop this concept, and feel free to share your thoughts and ideas. After all, this album is as much about the collective human experience as it is about individual creativity.
